σῶμα (sôma)

body, material body, person

Body — the material counterpart of the soul (ψυχή) and the source of its entanglement in the world of γένεσις. For Plato, the σῶμα is at once a tool of action, a prison or tomb (σῶμα-σῆμα) of the soul, and an obstacle to pure knowledge that the philosopher learns to discount.
